Cannabis and Exercise

Cannabis stereotypes abound in popular culture, perhaps none more persistently than that of the lazy, bleary-eyed, munchie-tripping stoner melting into a couch.

But as consumers become better educated about the cannabis plant and about how to best utilize specific strains, cannabinoids and terpenes — we’re seeing increasing acceptance for using cannabis in conjunction with workouts and exercise. Even at the elite and professional level, athletes are turning more and more to cannabis for help with motivation, focus, energy and recovery.

Soccer star Megan Rapinoe owns CBD brand Mendi, former pro football player and Heisman trophy winner Ricky Williams has parlayed his outspoken cannabis advocacy into entrepreneurship, launching Highsman, a cannabis and accessories brand. Williams also speaks frequently about the positive effects cannabis has had on his mental health. Olympic sprinter Sha’Carri Richardson was famously suspended in 2021 for using cannabis to cope with the emotional fallout of her mother’s death.

In March 2023, podcast host Adam Ill, of @theOGpotcast, ran the Los Angeles Marathon while documenting himself getting high throughout the 26.2 mile run.

Athletes who pair weed with their workouts have reported positive and wide-ranging side effects, including sensory improvement, heightened appreciation of their natural surroundings and attuned emotional balance.

One study found that 80% of cannabis users mix it with their exercise, with those subjects reporting an increase in motivation and enjoyment and a boost in recovery. Another study found that older marijuana users got more exercise than those who abstain.

Though cannabis can elevate and enhance an exercise experience, it’s important to be aware of the possible negative consequences of mixing the two, including anxiety and confusion.

While safety should always be a primary concern (probably best not to take on a gnarly surf session in unpredictable and raging seas while high), there are responsible and targeted ways to deliver a specific effect for your chosen activity, whether it be a breezy hike, a yoga session, a jiu jitsu roll, a round of golf or whatever else gets you moving.

If it’s a motivational kick you need, we recommend Mendocino Family Farm Jealousy BX1 from for its elevating effects.
